My Mom is a legend because of her amazing Sloppy Joe recipe! It’s always a crowd-pleaser, and it is actually one of the easiest things to throw together!

The secret ingredient is the Homade (brand) chili sauce. If you cannot find this chili sauce, DO NOT use any other brand of chili sauce. It’s just not nearly as good with a different brand. Trust me. This chili sauce is a Utah original, but it looks like it’s sold all over the nation now! But I do apologize to all those of you who won’t be able to find this at your grocery store. It can be found on Amazon (for a pretty penny). Feel free to comment below and tell me where you live and what store you have found this at, so others can come back and reference it!

Note: when I demonstrated this on my Instagram stories, I used 1.3 pounds of ground beef. To accommodate that, I used the entire can of tomato soup. Also, I tried out the Kroger brand of tomato soup (as opposed to Campbell’s) and was pleasantly surprised. The soup had no BPA, no corn syrup, and fewer preservatives. 👍🏼

  INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 of a white/yellow onion
  • 2/3 of a 10 3/4 oz. can of tomato soup (or the whole can if you like it saucier)
  • 1 jar of Homade Chili Sauce

  DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and the onion until each is cooked through and onion is translucent.

  2. Add the tomato soup and the chili sauce. Stir to combine.

  3. Turn heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer for 2-3 minutes.

  4. Fill some hamburger buns with meat mixture, and enjoy!

      ENJOY!

  1. Just found you can order a case of 12 jars of the Homemade Chili Sauce from Walmart for $35.88. That’s $2.99 a jar. I saw it selling on Amazon for way more…as much as $10.91 for just one jar!

Audra, I am so glad they worked out well for you guys! It really means a lot when you come back and tell me! Also, come thanks for the tip that you found them at Tom Thumb.

  4. Oh my gosh just made these and they are AMAZING!!!!! Definitely beats manwhich by far, as my husband says he doesn’t have to add ketchup to these. I even made a double batch thinking I would have left overs and not a chance. We couldn’t eat it fast enough and the whole house smells incredible!!! So good and so glad we found this recipe and the sauce on Amazon. Totally worth it. Will be a staple in our house for sure. Thank you thank you thank you Amber. Next trying your cinnamon rolls Christmas morning 😋

  5. I saw your IG story last week and knew that I had to try the recipe. Being unable to find the chili sauce in MN, I ordered 2 jars from Amazon to give the recipe a try. Not only was this fast and easy, the flavor was amazing! I will make sure to keep the ingredients on hand from now on.

Hi Gail! That made my day. Thanks for coming back to tell me. I am so glad you were able to find the chili sauce and you enjoyed the recipe.

  6. 4 yrs and this is still our favorite go to recipe! So good. 🤤 Sometimes we like to add chopped dill or sweet pickles before serving. So good!

  7. My mother always used Homade chile sauce, and I have, too. So, I’ve been eating it since they were first established in the 1950s.* You are the first person I’ve seen who uses it for Sloppy Joes – just like my mother did! Sloppy Joes don’t taste right without it to me.

*BTW this was in Los Angeles, so it’s been available outside of Utah for 70 years.

    Thanks for posting this.

  8. I’m 70. Live in wi. I grew up on these sloppy joes. My Mom made them with Heinz chili sauce and also added celery and green pepper. They are the best! Having them for supper tonight.

  9. I made this tonight ! We absolutely loved it ! Will be making again. I didn’t have beef so I used ground chicken instead. So yummy !!!! Thank you for sharing your moms recipe.

  10. This is my all time favorite sloppy Joe recipe. It comes together so quick and is a crowd pleaser. I always buy 2 jars of homemade chili sauce to have an extra hand.
