Cake Mix Oreo Cookies are so easy to make and turn out so tasty. The cookies are chewy, chocolatey, and so delicious. And the homemade frosting is smooth and luscious. They look impressive but take very little effort to put together.

I made this recipe for my youth group and they loved them! Kids love the concept of “homemade Oreos,” but these cookies are adult-approved as well.

Ingredients for Cake Mix Oreo Cookies

Chocolate cake mix

You can use any kind of chocolate cake mix that you like. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, devil’s food; any will work. The cake mix is the key here because it contains rising agents, sugar, and salt, so you don’t need to measure out and add any of those ingredients separately.

Eggs

We’re adding eggs to help these cookies bind together and create a yummy and chewy texture.

Oil

I use avocado oil in this recipe. It’s a neutral tasting oil that doesn’t add any weird flavor to the cookies. You can also use vegetable oil if that’s what you have. The oil helps the cookies stay soft and moist.

Flour

I add just a tiny bit of flour to the cake mix because I think the texture ends up better.

Frosting

Salted butter

I like to use salted butter for frosting because it tastes more flavorful than using unsalted butter. It’s also what I always have on hand.

Powdered sugar

Powdered sugar is important for this recipe. If you’ve never made homemade frosting, know that you cannot sub powdered sugar for regular sugar.

Vanilla

For flavor. Don’t skip this! You could also add almond or coconut extract if you like that.

How to Make Cake Mix Oreo Cookies

Make the Cookies

These Cake Mix Oreo Cookies are so simple to make. These would be a great recipe to make with your kids.
Preheat the oven to 350 ºF. In a bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, and flour. The mixture will be sticky and won’t look like regular cookie dough. That’s okay! Scoop the dough into 1 tablespoon-sized balls and roll until smooth.

Bake for about 8 minutes or until set. These cookies do not take long at all. Be careful not to overbake them. Let the cookies cool on a wire rack before frosting.

Make the Frosting

Make the frosting by whisking the softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla together until smooth and fluffy.

Assemble the Cookies

Spread some frosting onto the flat side of one of the cookies, then put another cookie on top to make an Oreo sandwich.
