I have been cooking for my family for decades now, and something just happened for the first time. My son taught me how to make ribs in the oven! My 14-year-old loves meat more than anyone I know, and he has perfected his oven baked ribs recipe. These ribs are coated with the tastiest rub, baked low and slow in the oven for a few hours, and basted with the most delicious barbecue sauce.

Ingredients for Oven-Baked Ribs

What Kind of Ribs Should I Buy?

For this recipe, I used a rack of meaty pork back ribs. These are different from spare ribs and short ribs. I wouldn’t recommend subbing either of these in this recipe because they cook very differently!

Rib Rub

To season the ribs before cooking, you’ll need:

  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons mustard

Some people have asked me if they can leave out the mustard. I wouldn’t recommend it! The mustard helps all of the seasonings to stick to the ribs well. These ribs really don’t have a strong mustard flavor at all. So, if you don’t like mustard, don’t be scared to try this recipe. My husband hates mustard and he loved these ribs. Please just try to trust me here!

Semi-Homemade Barbecue Sauce

My son loves to make his own sauce and add a little bit of store-bought barbecue sauce to make it even more tasty. To make this sauce, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/3 cup store-bought barbecue sauce for good measure

How Much Does This Recipe Make?

This recipe is for a single rack of ribs, so double or triple it depending on how many people you are going to feed. Definitely plan on more ribs than you think you’ll need because they will get eaten up. Trust me!

How to Make Ribs in the Oven

You might think that you need a fancy smoker or grill to make delicious ribs at home, but I’m here to tell you that all you need is an oven!

Making delicious ribs in the oven takes time. You’ll want to cook them low and slow to get them to be fall off the bone tender. If you cook them on high heat they will be tough and not nearly as delicious.

First, prepare your ribs.

This recipe works best with meaty pork back ribs. To prepare your work surface, criss cross some aluminum foil and place the ribs in the middle. Remove the membrane from the boney side. You should be able to peel it off easily.

Mix the spice ingredients together in a small bowl and set to the side. Spread mustard on each side of the ribs, coating well and rubbing it in well.

Sprinkle half of the spice mixture on one side of the ribs and rub it into the meat. Repeat for the other side, making sure every surface is covered.

Wrap the ribs up in foil tightly, making sure there are no gaps. Then wrap it again in another layer of foil for good measure.

Bake, baste, and bake again.

Place the wrapped ribs on a baking sheet and bake at 275 degrees for 2.5-3 hours.

After your timer is up, unwrap the ribs and brush the sauce on both sides of the ribs. Make sure to coat everything and use all of your sauce. Put the ribs back into the oven, uncovered, for about 10 minutes. Your ribs should be looking nice and saucy and be very tender!

Add a little more barbecue sauce to the top of your ribs, serve, and enjoy!

What to Serve with Oven Baked Ribs

Serve these ribs at your next friend or family gathering and everyone will be begging you for the recipe!

If you’re making ribs for a Sunday dinner, serve them with Parmesan Garlic Asparagus, and Roasted Smashed Potatoes.

If you’re making ribs for a backyard barbeque or summer party, serve them with Mexican Street Corn Dip and chips, my favorite Pasta Salad and this yummy Simple Fruit Salad.
